Lived experience is so important. Stories have power. They help us make sense of our world, and our place in it. Hearing first hand accounts of what later are identified as important world events have incredible value. These stories provide a nuanced view of the very human forces at play in the forging of communities, identities and history.
This project began through a series of personal conversations between Dr. Bhai Harbans Lal ji and Ek Ong Kaar Khalsa Michaud.
Dr. Lal shared his insightful stories about the changes the Sikh community has gone through during his lifetime (almost a century!). Ek Ong Kaar was captivated by these stories about his childhood and early years.
Originally, the conversations were just informal, personal dialogues. Then the two video recorded the stories in order to preserve them. Finally, after transcribing the videos and adding additional information for context, these Bits of Memory are being shared as a series of blog posts.
We pray that you will experience the value in these stories. We know many people out there have stories of your own to contribute to this project. We urge you to consider sharing that with us before they are forgotten and lost.
Many of your friends may have passed away without sharing their own memories. This is a loss that can never be replaced. We are providing this space so that togetherwe can prevent further loss of these memories and preserve this treasure of the Sikh national history.
This project is supported in part through the Ik Jot Foundation, an educational non-profit dedicated to researching and preserving the memory of the pluralistic history and philosophy of the Sikh nation.
